medical consultation

Kane Hall Barry offers consultation appointments. These appointments are helpful when a referring provider wants a second opinion or wants a neurologist’s impression. In these cases the referring provider wants the patient to return to him in order to discuss the findings and determine the best next steps. It includes an examination and testing (if ordered). The impression and testing results are sent back to the referring provider so he can discuss it with his patient. It can be conducted any time to address concerns.

Focus Areas: Neurological & Sleep

telemedicine

Kane Hall Barry Neurology offers telemedicine (audio/video) appointments to patients when appropriate. Telemedicine is a convenient way for patients to consult with their physician remotely. During a telemedicine visit, our providers may order tests, interpret results, prescribe or adjust medications, and update treatment plans. While most visits can be conducted via telemedicine, some still need to be in person either due to the nature of the concerns or due to insurance coverage considerations.

diagnostic testing

Kane Hall Barry Neurology offers a comprehensive testing to help providers diagnose and determine treatment plans.

Diagnostic testing options available on-site:

EMG/NCV testing is used to evaluate the function of the nerves in the body, the electrical activity of the muscles, and how well and how fast the nerves can send the electrical signals. Testing takes approximately 1 hour and is conducted on your arms, legs or both. More Information

EEG tests are used to detect the electrical activity in the brain and can be awake  (most common) or sleep deprived.  Testing takes approximately 1 hour and is conducted by placing electrodes on your scalp.  More Information-awake EEG – More Information-sleep deprived EEG

Evoked potential tests can be VER-Visual Evoked Response or BAER-Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials.  Testing is performed by applying small sticky pads/electrodes to your scalp and then tracking and recording the brain wave patterns in response to various stimuli.  Each test takes approximately 30-45 minutes. More Information

Carotid ultrasound tests use sound waves to produce pictures of the arteries in the neck which carry blood from the heart to the brain. Transcranial doppler tests measure how quickly the blood flows through the blood vessels. The tests take about 30 minutes to complete.

Spirometry testing is used to perform a forced vital capacity test to determine lung capacity and is an important indicator of lung health. It measures how much air you can breathe in and out of your lungs, as well as how easily and fast you can blow the air out of your lungs. The test takes approximately 30 minutes.  More Information

A Home Sleep Test (HST) is an overnight test conducted at home to accurately diagnose obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The easy to use device records your sleep data, which is then interpreted by our board certified Sleep doctor. Many patients prefer the test as they complete it in the comfort of their own home, and may insurance companies prefer it as it costs less than an in lab test. Patient’s pick up the equipment from our office and return it the next day. More information

Cognitive and neuropsychological tests measure memory, language, math, visual and spatial skills, and other abilities related to mental functioning and are used as a diagnosis tool.

Neurologists may use cognitive assessment tools such as the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) or Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) to assess cognitive skills in people with suspected deficits or to identify the need for additional testing to confirm a diagnosis.  Detailed neuropsychological testing is time-consuming and requires a separate appointment for a series of computerized or paper tests proctored by a qualified health professional or technician.

Our doctors suggest anyone age 50 or above take cognitive tests once per year.

Many times, such knots can be felt under the skin. Trigger points may irritate the nerves around them and cause referred pain, or pain that is felt in another part of the body.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has become the treatment of choice for advanced stages of Parkinson’s disease, medically intractable essential tremor, and complicated segmental and generalized dystonia.

The programming of DBS devices is considered the most crucial factor for the individual overall outcome after DBS implantation and the implanted pulse generator (IPG) is the only modifiable factor.

Adjusting stimulation parameters depends to a large extent on personal experience. Kane Hall Barry Neurology has trained and experienced clinician to carry out disease-specific programming strategies for DBS.

Vagus nerve stimulation is a type of epilepsy treatment and is sometimes referred to as pacemaker for brain.

Vagus nerve stimulation prevents seizures by sending regular, mild pulses of electrical energy to the brain via the vagus nerve.

Per FDA approval, it can treat focal or partial seizures that do not respond to seizure medications. This is called drug-resistant epilepsy or refractory epilepsy.

Kane Hall Barry Neurology has trained and experienced clinicians to program the VNS devices to deliver pulses or stimulation at regular intervals.
