Headache FAQs

A headache is a pain in your head or face that is often described as throbbing or constant.

There are many types of headaches including cluster headaches, migraines, new daily persistent headaches, and tension headaches.

Migraine headaches are intense and may have more symptoms than head pain alone, including nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, an aura or other changes in vision.  Migaraine sufferers often experience warning signs before the onset of head pain, including food cravings, mood change, fatigue, neck stiffness, frequent yawning, constipation, and/or increased thirst and urination.

Migraine headache is characterized by a throbbing headache of moderate to severe intensity. The pain is usually on one side of the head, but may involve both.

From a few hours to a few days.

Chronic migraine may be characterized as more than fifteen headache days per month over a three-month period where more than nine or more are migrainous (a long-lasting migraine that does not go away by itself).

Episodic migraine is characterized as 14 or fewer headache days in a month.

YES! The World Health Organization named migraine as one of the 10 most disabling illnesses?

Migraines can be frequent, intense, and disruptive to your daily life.

Maybe.  Kane Hall Barry evaluates each patients needs to determine the best treatment option.  We do prescribe Botox as a treatment but there are many factors to consider to determine if it’s best for you.

Be aware of your migraine warning signs and take your pain medications as soon as possible. Always follow dosing instructions on the package or from your healthcare provider.

Relaxing in a quiet, dark room may reduce your pain. Sleep if possible. Try ice packs for numbing or hot packs for relaxing muscles. A little caffeine may help. Keep a headache journal to try to identify your triggers.

As soon as you are able, ask your Primary Care Physician for a referral to a neurologist, the doctors specifically trained to treat migraine headache. If you don’t have a Primary Care Physician, call a neurologist yourself (our number is (817) 267-6290) and then go get a Primary Care Physician. If you are one of our patients, call our office to see what options are available.  We may be able to do a same day injection or infusion to break your headache
