What is Charcot-Marie-Tooth?
Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease symptoms include weakness of the foot and lower leg muscles which usually present in adolescence or early adulthood. Pain can range from mild to severe and progression of the disease is gradual.
Kane Hall Barry has been recognized as a center of excellence for Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease (CMT) by the Charcot-Marie-Tooth-Association (CMTA). Dr Ansari is board certified in neurology and electrodiagnostic medicine and is the director of our our CMT Center. Dr. Ansari has extensive knowledge of CMT and specializes in neuromuscular disorders.
Diagnosis begins with a complete medical history followed by an EMG test. If the EMG is inconclusive, a nerve biopsy may be ordered to confirm the diagnosis.
Unfortunately, there is no cure for CMT. CMT, it is not considered fatal and is helped by physical and occupational therapy, braces and orthopedic devices, and sometimes orthopedic surgery. If pain is severe, pain management is also an option.Treatments slow the progression and minimize symptoms in order to improve quality of life.
